Matt Lecar is the Principal Consultant in GE Energy’s Smart Grid team, based in San Francisco. Mr. Lecar is a veteran utility industry expert with an 18 year track record in venture capital, new product development, international business development, and management consulting for utilities, investors, and start-ups. Recently, he joined GE Energy as part of the new Smart Grid Strategy team within Energy Consulting, focusing on demand side technology (AMI, Demand Response, Home Area Networking, Business/Industrial Automation, Energy Efficiency, distributed renewables, plug-in vehicles, etc.)
During an 18-year career in the energy utility industry, Mr. Lecar launched and directed innovative initiatives for some of the world’s best known utilities. Mr. Lecar was the Fund Manager for the California Clean Energy Fund (CalCEF)’s Clean Energy Angel Fund and a Venture Consultant with Trinity Ventures, an established Sand Hill Road generalist venture capital firm on its 9th fund with over $1.3 billion under management. He spearheaded new product development for Pacific Gas & Electric Company in San Francisco and developed and managed partnerships between U.S. energy technology startups and the $90 billion Electricité de France Group.
A strategic thinker who sees the big picture, Mr. Lecar is frequently sought as a guest speaker for events such as Metering America, Net Impact and the Cleantech Venture Forum. He is author of several research publications, a regular contributor to the Smart Grid News and Metering International magazine and wrote a chapter of Inside the Minds: Energy Venture Capital Best Practices.
Mr. Lecar holds a Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor’s degree with high honors in Physics and Political Science from U.C. Berkeley.
